Final Entry

To wrap it all up feels amazing.
It has been a journey in placing information that I've learned from this class into a public showcase. As far as blogging is concerned, I've reasoned that they have a youtube video for just about everything. This blog has been an experience because I've done little blogging prior to this. I love technology for various reasons:ipods, research, microwaves, and phones. However, I feel like I am always at war with it. I'm constantly trying to get it to do what I want. What I am trying to say is that I'm surprised by how smooth it went.
The research I've done has been based around Social Problems, that is the name of the course. It would be awesome if they had a class titled Social Solutions. However they don't and I doubt that has yet to come. There will be more problems listed in 10 more years and the cycle will continue because we are human. I like that for every problem listed there was something being done about it, no matter how little. It has inspired me to try to get involved somehow. I don't know what I'll do yet, but that's always exciting.  God Bless us all.

Chapter 15

If you'll remember, my topics for Chapter 15 were, "Causes of War" and "Social Problems Associated with Conflict, War, and Terrorism."

I do not like addressing this chapter. I hate thinking about it, but it does exist. Therefore, we should stay informed and learn to communicate properly.

"One is left with the horrible feeling now that war settles nothing; that to win a war is as disastrous as to lose one."
-Agatha Christie

I found some good journal articles to move right along with these topics. There is so much information and each article is specific towards its research. It is really difficult to decide on which ones to choose.

The first journal article http://ida.lib.uidaho.edu:3304/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=f463bdf2-5857-4e4b-89bb-a7f7bf580e71%40sessionmgr104&vid=1&hid=107
compares WWI and the Cold War. They examine domestic resources and current events of that time period. While examining the power shifts and other variables, they look at what preventative measures may have been taken.
This second journal article analyzes the mental consequences that war brings to the men that have served their country. http://ida.lib.uidaho.edu:3304/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=f060603d-743a-45bb-afc2-382d49a1c29c%40sessionmgr113&vid=1&hid=107
The article explains that the consequences of this could lead to homelessness, drug or alcohol abuse, and other risk factors.

"You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."
-Albert Einstein

There is a news article about children taking part in war. The communities don't have many resources. Their children are forced to fight as soldiers. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/07/100715090640.htm
This next article is on the civil war. It is a basic historical overview on what happened over a century ago. Civil war brought on by social unrest and other political factors. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/2012/11/30/this-week-the-civil-war/qCNshMDXFKmIbphQBJDw9N/story.html

A type of database or reference site such as this http://ippnw.org/ is one that has information on preventing nuclear war. It has mental health blogs and other information. Which leads me into another good site to share. http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/political-science/17-42-causes-and-prevention-of-war-spring-2009/ This website is one of that is useful regarding information on cause and prevention of war. There are articles and other reading sources.

The following video discusses why we are in war. Is it a moral or superiority thing? There are several video clips of different politicians and the words they use to manipulate warfare.

Here is another spin on war. He discusses the war we are in now and some of the problems associated with it. He talks about how we don't need another war and that we need another intervention plan.

Reflections on Chapter 13

To get started with chapter 13's topics, which are "Environmental Problems Overview" and "Social Causes of the Environmental Problems," I'm going to start with some journal articles.

The two topics of interest are pretty well embedded in each other. With that in mind, this first journal article relates more to topic one. It is specific to a certain problem. The article is about lead pollution and the risks factored into that. They discuss medical problems, air problems, and other issues it causes. http://ida.lib.uidaho.edu:3304/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=d92b43b9-3144-46dd-bdfa-64c1dd2411c8%40sessionmgr114&vid=1&hid=105
This next journal article addresses more on topic two. The article is about how human behavior has an impact on the environment. They discuss resource dilemmas, population statistics, and cultural variation. http://ida.lib.uidaho.edu:3304/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=8aa0d91e-a420-42bb-b26f-46aa95ce4aa1%40sessionmgr111&vid=1&hid=105

I liked both of these quotes. I particularly love the second quote, but if you haven't read her books- I recommend you do.

"We have modified our environment so radically that we must now modify ourselves to exist in this new environment."
-Norbert Wiener
&

"The difference between animals and humans is that animals change themselves for the environment, but humans change the environment for themselves."

This next link is to a news story by National Geographic on grasshoppers. It appears that the changing environment has had an impact on them as well. The males place themselves by the road now and sing their mating calls higher to be heard. According to the article, they aren't the only species to change their pattern. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/12/121121-grasshoppers-bugs-insects-singing-science-animals/
The next news story is about carbon emissions. They discuss climate change and how carbon emissions are too high. Although, the scientists appear as though they are not being heard.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-20556703
It is a shame that we are so dependent on the "needs" we have learned to be comfortable with.
For some more information http://publicrecords.searchsystems.net/United-States/Environmental-Databases/ this is an interesting link to look at. They have numerous resources available. It appears you can find statistics and information by state and even general stats per household.
Also, http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/ngs/index.jsp?code=AF10057&afsrc=1
I like the national geographic website. They are open for articles, blogs, and resource information.

This youtube video discusses the changing environment. It draws on the various environmental changes and the warming that is happening, as well as the future we are facing.
The following video is about how we can make a difference. There are ways we can start small and grow big. The video addresses how we as an individual can take responsibility through small changes.

As they say, "Go make a difference!"

Review on Chapters 13 & 15

The base of these postings come from the book, Understanding Social Problems. The authors are Linda Mooney, David Knox, and Caroline Schacht.

CHAPTER 13

In this chapter, there was a lot going on. I chose the section, “Environmental Problems: An Overview,” as a topic of interest. I chose it because it appears to cover most environmental concerns. The material consists of our environmental footprint and the depletion of natural resources, air pollution, global warming and climate change, land pollution, water pollution, light pollution, chemical and health problems. I’ve heard a lot about these issues but always as an overview in some course. I’ve tried to attend a couple of lecture or videos during “earth week” on campus and those were sad to go to. However, the lectures were cool.  None of my courses have really plummeted deep into it so I think it would be an awesome research topic. I would like to see what else people have to say on the topic. If I remember, I would also like to visit a few websites to see how I can become more engaged or actively involved.

This next topic of interest is under the section titled, “Social Causes of Environmental Problems.” I would like to dig a little more into what is going on with us as far as environmental problems. The book characterizes three subsections under this as, population growth, industrialization and economic development, and cultural values and attitudes. I found it awful that the book referred to a source in saying that the number one polluter in the US happens to be that of its military. We all contribute in some way to the depletion of resources and the environment. It is clear that there is quite a bit happening on the individual level as well as the industrial level. Therefore, I find it interesting and I would like to discover more about it. I want to know how we can change just a little or what social factors still remain.

CHAPTER 15

I didn’t like this chapter, but I don’t like to hear about war or terrorism. I guess no one does. Anyway, due to this dislike, I chose to focus my topic on the “Causes of War.” I think it just comes down to resources or differences people have.  All of the subsections support that reasoning. They include, conflict over resources, land, values, ideologies, race, ethnicity, and religion. The rest of the subsections go into defense and security, civil wars, revolutions, and nationalism. When reflecting on these topics, I guess it comes down to not understanding why these differences matter to some people or cultures. Maybe that relates back to an anthropological paradigm. I would like to read some more on these topics that start conflicts and potentially war.

My second topic for chapter 15 is on “Social Problems Associated with Conflict, War, and Terrorism.” These aren’t just social problems tied with it; they are the consequences of something horrific. That comprises of death, disability, rape, psychological costs, social costs, and destruction. It should be blatantly obvious that these are the results of war. However, it is shocking to read the things we don’t know about some of these subsections. I would like to read some other assessments on the social problems related to conflict and war. It makes you wonder how we have all changed or doped up on the idea that we are all supposed to be of one person. It is apparent that these minor differences can’t be overlooked and cause harm to others.

Chapter 11 Reflection

Recap: My topics for Chapter 11 were
"Prejudice Against Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals" and "Discrimination Against Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals."
To start off with the topics there are a couple of quotes I would like to share.
"“With ignorance comes fear- from fear comes bigotry. Education is the key to acceptance.”
Kathleen Patel
&
“Gender preference does not define you. Your spirit defines you.”
P.C. Cast

I love this image because it is soo cute and I find it completely relevant!

I think this next photo speaks for itself.

No one deserves to be descriminated against. I don't understand why differences should bring out the worst in people.

Anyway, these topics are both on similar grounds.
The first journal article I found is about discrimination against lesbian, gays, and bisexuals in the workforce. The article goes on to address just how deep this runs and what social research has been done on it already. Then the authors looked to see if there was anything that was actively being done about it.
http://ida.lib.uidaho.edu:3304/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=1bc17ae5-fee5-47f6-b326-61f2649e8b97%40sessionmgr104&vid=1&hid=105

This next journal article is about hate crimes that take place on lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. The authors analyzed the statistics. They also assessed what kind of psychological problems took place after the hate crimes. http://ida.lib.uidaho.edu:3304/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=b5d3490b-a751-44b7-9dcd-cb3c7c589a74%40sessionmgr111&vid=1&hid=105

These next links are to some news stories on prejudice and discrimination incidents that have taken place. This one http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/210544.php leads to a story on LGB teens that have been discriminated against. A student from Yale performed the study and found the results. It is sad to see these unfortunate evens occur due to sexual orientation.
This link http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,299025,00.html is to a news story about discrimination that has taken place in the workplace and the different prejudices with it. With that they lead into what is happening to protect them and their rights.

I have found a couple of websites that would be useful in gathering more information. http://www.avert.org/homophobia.htm This website just has a lot of good information in general in regards to why some people might act homophobic.
The next is a link to a webpage that has a lot of articles on this topic. It is interesting to check it out.
http://academicwritingtips.org/component/k2/item/2216-gays-lesbians-bisexuals-and-transgender-issues.html They just discuss the current issues at hand and the struggles presented with it.

This video they address the statistics. They address the problems in what people are facing in the workplace. The workplace is big deal and some places are now taking action, but that isn't enough.

This next video is to show that we all need to take responsibility for change. We all need to do something. In this video, he addresses a couple of issues on behalf of the LGB community. However, he makes it clear that it takes all of us.
